The idea for the Dyrt started sometime in 2012 when husband-wife co-founders Kevin Long and Sarah Smith realized how much they struggled just to find a decent campground on the internet. The lack of campground information made the experience exhausting, and they were determined to change things.
Launched in 2013, the goal of the Dyrt is to simplify the camper’s search for quality campgrounds. Today, The Dyrt has grown to become so much more. Currently, you can use The Dyrt to find campgrounds in all 50 American states. As good as this may be for American users, the app is unfortunately useless for everyone else outside of the US.
Some users have complained about the app’s exclusivity, but The Dyrt actually has a pretty good explanation. Here’s what the team has to say in response to a frustrated user who wanted to use the app outside of the US:
Our hope is to include Canada and Mexico in the future, but we don't have a date for that yet. We are working to optimize the experience in the US and then hope to expand to others using the expertise we've gained by gaining knowledge with our US listing first. We appreciate and value your feedback!
So far, The Dyrt has done a pretty good job of covering campgrounds in the US. Hopefully, they'll be able to scale up and go global. For now, though, non-Americans will have to use another app for their campground-finding needs.

Another app we’re super fond of is Boondockers Welcome. It’s sort of like Harvest Hosts in that it lets you look for locations to park your RV for free.
The difference here is that Boondockers Welcome lets you park on private properties instead. It gives you access to over 2,000 host locations all over the US, where you can park free of charge.
At the onset, Harvest Hosts and Boondockers Welcome look identical, but we’re members of both, and we’ve personally found it best to subscribe to both.
With Harvest Hosts, you get access to public properties. Boondockers Welcome, on the other hand, gives you access to a community of RVers who will personally welcome you and your rig into the comfort of their homes, where you can settle down and recharge for the next trip.
With The Dyrt PRO, you can find dispersed campsites as well.
Is The Dyrt worth it?
Yes. Definitely try The Dyrt, especially if you camp full-time. Even if you don’t subscribe to the PRO version, The Dyrt still remains an invaluable resource for camping in the US.
